How is DSL different than cable Interent?

Cable companies provide television, music, data and other services over a common cable infrastructure. Each neighborhood segment serves a large number of customers who all share the same limited Internet bandwidth.

While you may, at times, get the full rated speed you pay for, the performance of your cable connection does depend on how much your neighbors are currently using it, and it may be considerably slower than you expect. Also, being a “shared infrastructure”, failures, maintenance, and upgrades tend to affect a large number of customers. DSL uses your own phone line, which is not a “shared infrastructure” and doesn’t suffer many of these limitations. Your Internet performance isn’t dependent on your neighbor since your connection runs separately back to the telephone office where we provide more than adequate bandwidth to accommodate the needs of our customers. Also, maintenance, upgrades, and failures only affect specific customers making DSL a much more reliable service. This is why Gaslight Media’s “business-grade” DSL connection provides more consistent performance and dependable service than your local cable TV Internet.

Why is DSL better then a traditional dial-up account?

Unlike a traditional dial-up modem connection, DSL is an “always on” connection with no need to log on every time you need to use the Internet and it doesn't tie up your phone line when you're using the Internet. Traditional modems provide a maximum download speed of 53.3 kbps with a maximum upload speed of 33.6 kbps—only a small fraction of the speed available over DSL.

How does DSL work?

DSL uses the same copper wire that your current telephone uses without interfering with your regular phone service. Special equipment at the telephone office adds the DSL signal to your phone line. A small filter at your end separates the DSL signal from your regular phone service ensuring that the two signals don't interfere with each other. In this way, you get both high-speed Internet and regular phone service over your existing phone line with only minimal installation requirements.

Do I need a separate account for every computer in my home or business?

No. Your DSL Internet service can easily be shared on as many computers as you like. To do this, you setup either a wired “Ethernet” or wireless “WiFi” network to connect your computers to a DSL router — we can help you do this if you like. The only limitation is the amount of Internet bandwidth over your DSL connection. The lighter the Internet use on each computer, the more computers you can have on your local network. For heavy use, you may only want a few computers on the same DSL line.
