Consulting Service Helps Untangle Web of Broadband Options

December 17, 2009

September, 22, 2009 – Petoskey, MI - The growing demand for Broadband services is driving Northern Michigan communities and regional organizations to explore and even invest in Broadband development projects. Today, Gaslight Media is announcing a consulting service to help these groups sort through the flurry of proposals and technology options, and to identify viable solutions to real needs.

Recently, some $500M in “stimulus” fund requests were submitted for Broadband projects in Michigan alone and more are expected over the next several months. Many of these projects involve collaboration and even direct financial commitments by government and economic development groups. Analyzing these proposals and the many other options offered can be daunting. The objectives of this consulting service are to help these organizations determine the needs of their communities, lay out a process to identify viable solutions, and avoid potential problems.

“Northern Michigan faces unique challenges for Broadband development,” remarks Dave Wright, vice president and engineering manager for Gaslight Media. “For years we've been looking for the right 'silver-bullet' technology and provider models that can overcome the technical and financial barriers. Unfortunately, it's just not that simple, so we wanted to help others better understand their Broadband needs and organize and evaluate options.”

Studies frequently show that better Broadband availability and adoption has a direct impact on economic development and quality of life. Frustration from a continued lack of these services invites quick adoption of any proposal that looks good on the surface. However, communities need to dig into the realities below that surface, define their Broadband objectives, understand the options available, and validate proposals that offer viable options. This is where experienced consultants can help.

Gaslight Media, well known for helping market many of Michigan's travel and tourism destinations through the Web, has also been engineering Internet and Broadband networks and providing network support since 1995. Mr. Wright and the other communications engineers at Gaslight Media have considerable experience with wireless and fiber-based networks, and a range of other network technologies. Gaslight Media Broadband consulting services are available to help define objectives, develop RFI/RFQ documents, evaluate proposals, and even help design and deploy new Broadband networks.
